Mencken called Carl Sandburg “indubitably an American in every pulse-beat”. The title tells exactly what is happening. I had been assuming that my distaste for Sandberg stemmed from having to read that same Fog poem in school every year. I am the umbrella the rain comes through. This book is made up of short stories that are funny but bizarre. I loved the lyrical language, but I really wasn’t a big fan of the nonsensical words or the repetition.
